LEGO Set Review: Mercedes-AMG G 63 & Mercedes-AMG SL 63 (76924) Speed Champions

76924 merecedes duo

Some LEGO sets come to you by chance, others by deliberate hunt, and some by the luck of an auction win. LEGO Speed Champions 76924: Mercedes-AMG G 63 & Mercedes-AMG SL 63 was one of those finds for me. Picked up sealed at auction, it later came as part of a Greystones haul that already carried with it the thrill of the chase. For a while, it stayed in the “sealed” pile, destined either for display, the museum showcase, or to be saved for the right occasion. That moment finally arrived as I was preparing the Alex Dunne Tapybl Formula 2 Rodin Motorsport McLaren MOC, and I realised it was time to open this Speed Champions dual-pack and enjoy the build with Luke and Rose at the kitchen table.

What we uncovered was one of the strongest modern Speed Champions sets: a powerful off-roader in the Mercedes-AMG G 63 and a sleek, performance-driven convertible in the Mercedes-AMG SL 63. Together, they tell a story of how LEGO captures two sides of Mercedes—heritage luxury meeting cutting-edge speed.

From Auction Find, then Greystones Haul to Kitchen Table Build

There’s always a certain tension when you open a sealed auction win. Do you keep it pristine? Do you save it for the museum? Or do you build it and create a new memory? For me, I was going to build it, LEGO has always been about the build, and when I picked this set up half built from a recent Greystones haul – it was time to build it, and keep the sealed set for the museum – to display in a sealed Speed Champions section, and this one is a built section.

Luke couldn’t wait to dive in, he has a soft spot for anything that looks powerful and big, so the G-Wagon was his instant favourite. Rose, on the other hand, gravitated towards the smaller convertible, fascinated by the idea of a LEGO car without a roof. I split the six bags between us, and we began the build session that turned into one of those family moments that LEGO has a habit of creating.

What’s in the Box?

Inside 76924 you’ll find 808 pieces across multiple numbered bags, along with two instruction manuals, one for each car. The dual manual approach works really well when building as a family: two people can build simultaneously without stepping on each other’s bricks.

  • Mercedes-AMG G 63 – A muscular black SUV with a wide stance, square edges, and instantly recognisable G-Wagon lines. LEGO designers packed in the boxy front grille, side steps, roof rack, and chunky wheel arches. The build nails the toughness of the real-life car.
  • Mercedes-AMG SL 63 – A compact, sleek convertible in yellow. It’s all about flow here: curved slopes capture the aerodynamic bodywork, and the car sits lower, giving a contrast to the towering G-Wagon.

Two minifigures come included:

  • A Mercedes-AMG driver in racing attire for the SL.
  • An off-road driver for the G 63, ready to take on rugged terrain.

Together, they reinforce the dual nature of the set – luxury sport meets rugged utility.

The Build Experience

Building both cars back-to-back highlights why Speed Champions has been so successful in its 8-stud era: there’s room for detail without losing the LEGO charm.

  • The G 63 build starts with a long chassis, gradually layering bricks to create that iconic boxy form. By the time you snap the roof rack on, it feels satisfyingly complete. Luke loved adding the big tyres, it gave the car a real sense of toughness.
  • The SL 63 build is more elegant. It uses clever slope placement to taper the rear, and the open-top design makes it stand out among other Speed Champions cars. Rose carefully applied the stickers on the grille and headlights, her steady hand might be better than mine.

Both builds are approachable and rewarding. They’re not overly complex, but the clever part usage keeps adults engaged, and the final models feel substantial in hand.

Redmond’s Forge Museum Display

For the Redmond’s Forge Museum, this set has a special role in the planned Speed Champions showcase. Most sets in the theme focus heavily on hypercars and racing icons, but the inclusion of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 broadens the story. It’s not just about track speed; it’s about brand identity. Mercedes’ heritage lies as much in luxury SUVs as in sleek sports cars, and LEGO has captured that duality in one box.

Displayed side by side, the G 63 towers with presence while the SL 63 sits sleek and low. Visitors to the museum will immediately notice the contrast, and it’s a natural entry point into discussing how Speed Champions has evolved into a theme about both motorsport and automotive lifestyle.

For the display commentary, I’m planning to include:

  • A note on the G-Wagon’s real-world reputation as both a luxury status symbol and an off-road workhorse.
  • A nod to the SL lineage, stretching back decades as a symbol of Mercedes’ luxury performance.
  • A reminder that LEGO Speed Champions is not just about chasing speed, but about celebrating the broader car culture.

Connection to Alex Dunne’s F2 Rodin Motorsport McLaren

While building the set, I had my Formula 2 Rodin McLaren MOC pieces laid out beside me. It was fitting: the SL 63 represented Mercedes’ road performance, the G 63 their off-road presence, and the MOC in progress represented the real motorsport future of Ireland’s own Alex Dunne.

This juxtaposition felt like a perfect reminder of what LEGO building is all about: blending official sets with personal projects, and weaving them into a larger story that connects play, display, and real-world inspiration.

Collector and Play Value

76924 has strong appeal on multiple fronts:

  • Collector’s Value: As a dual-pack with both SUV and sports car, it will always stand out in the Speed Champions lineup. Sets that offer contrast like this tend to age well.
  • Play Value: The G 63 is rugged and chunky, ready for “off-road” floor adventures, while the SL 63 is sleek and fast for racing. Luke and Rose immediately set them against each other, “Which one wins, the big one or the small one?” became the game of the evening.
  • Display Value: In the museum or on a shelf, they look striking side by side. The height difference between the two makes them feel like a natural duo.

Final Thoughts

Opening LEGO Speed Champions 76924 was absolutely the right choice. Beyond adding two fantastic cars to the Speed Champions section of the Redmond’s Forge Museum, it gave us another shared family build at the kitchen table, a story that’s as much a part of the set’s value as the bricks themselves.

The Mercedes-AMG G 63 is bold, blocky, and instantly iconic. The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 is sleek, fast, and elegant. Together, they embody two sides of the Mercedes brand, and LEGO has captured both with style.

For collectors, builders, or museum visitors, this set represents what Speed Champions does best: bridging automotive culture and LEGO creativity in a way that sparks conversation. And for us, it will always be tied to a Greystones haul, an auction win, and a kitchen table filled with bricks, stickers, and laughter.

Verdict:

  • Build: Fun, accessible, with strong contrast between models.
  • Play: Excellent balance of rugged vs sleek.
  • Display: Perfect for a showcase or museum.
  • Overall: One of the best Speed Champions dual-packs in recent years.
