LEGO Set Review: Motorized Lighthouse (21335) – A Beacon of Brick-Built Brilliance

21335 motorized lighthouse

There’s something magical about lighthouses. The romance of the sea, the solitude of the tower, and the reliable flash of the beacon guiding sailors home. LEGO’s 21335 Motorized Lighthouse brings all of that to life with stunning accuracy and beautiful design. Released under the LEGO Ideas line, this set is a testament to fan creativity and LEGO engineering, and right now, it’s available at a huge discount for LEGO Insiders: €224.99 instead of the €299.99 RRP.

First Impressions: A Stunning Display Piece

Opening the box, Darren, Luke (7), and Rose (4) were greeted by a wealth of rich, dark bricks, curved lighthouse elements, and clever mechanical components. Luke immediately zeroed in on the Fresnel-style rotating light, while Rose was fascinated by the cute lighthouse keeper and his cat. Darren, meanwhile, appreciated the architectural beauty; a fusion of rocky shoreline, spiral tower, and charming cottage.

With 2,065 pieces, it’s a build that rewards patience and attention to detail. As Darren laid out the parts on the kitchen table, the whole family was involved; from sorting bricks to helping snap together the gear housing for the light motor.

The Build Experience: Engineering Meets Aesthetic

What truly elevates this set is its blend of functionality and form. The motorized light, powered by a battery box and LEGO’s Powered Up system, rotates with a soft, satisfying whir. It’s mesmerizing in a dim room, the lighthouse casting its beam like a real maritime signal.

The rocky cliff base is sculpted with textured slopes, creating a natural feel. There’s even a hidden cave with treasure nestled below, a detail that thrilled Luke. The red-roofed cottage is equally charming, featuring a cozy interior with a fireplace and printed log bricks.

The spiral stairs inside the tower are particularly impressive, compact and clever, without ever feeling cramped. Assembling the light enclosure with the lens and rotating mechanism was Darren’s highlight: it’s rare to find a LEGO set that’s this interactive and display-worthy.

Minifigs & Accessories: Small Touches, Big Charm

The set includes just two minifigures: the lighthouse keeper and a sailor in a rowboat, along with a seagull, cat, and a tiny rowing boat. While minimal, the character design is fitting, classic nautical styling, complete with wool hats and printed vests.

The inclusion of the boat adds an extra layer of storytelling. Rose immediately imagined the sailor being rescued in a storm, while Luke pretended to signal the boat with the beacon. It’s these play moments, even in a mostly display-centric set, that make LEGO truly magical for families.

Value for Money: Is It Worth It?

At the full RRP of €299.99, this set is undeniably premium. But the LEGO Insiders price of €224.99 makes it far more accessible, especially considering the inclusion of a motorized lighting system, intricate design, and over 2,000 parts. The value is even better if you’re a collector or display enthusiast.

The set is recommended for ages 18+, but we found it to be a great intergenerational project. Darren handled the technical sections, while Luke and Rose helped with smaller sub-builds and storytelling.
